Premiering on Broadway in 1981, Merrily We Roll Along is based on the 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The Sondheim musical follows three friends navigating the ups and downs of their careers and personal lives.

Though there is no official release date just yet, the film has been described as an "immersive experience," with groundbreaking direction by Maria Friedman.

Other Iconic Sondheim Musicals

Merrily We Roll Along is just one part of a larger body of work that continues to shape the stage today. Here are some other Sondheim musicals that have become staples in theater history:

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street A barber, his pies, and a thirst for vengeance in Victorian London - this dark and thrilling Sondheim musical made its way to the big screen (and earned over $150 million) at the gothic hands of Tim Burton!

Into the Woods With every wish comes a consequence. Another blockbuster starring Meryl Streep, Into the Woods is a fascinating fusion of Brothers Grimm fairy tales. The stage production has won three Tony Awards, while the film grossed over $213 million worldwide.

Company The original 1970 production of Company earned a record-breaking 14 Tony Award nominations, ultimately winning six. It was one of the first book musicals to explore themes of contemporary dating, marriage, and divorce, and is widely recognized as a prime example of a concept musical with no traditional linear storyline.

Sunday in the Park with George Inspired by the artwork of Georges Seurat, this deeply emotional show about art, life, and legacy features the standout number "Finishing the Hat," a quintessential Sondheim song that perfectly encapsulates his ability to blend personal reflection with universal themes.
